Desta Robert Burns

Desta Robert Burns, age 15, of East Lansing, Michigan passed away on Monday, March 31, 2025. He was born April 15, 2009 in Duna, Ethiopia. He is survived by his parents Robert Burns and Kimberly Burns, his loving sister Olivia Burns, and his birth mother Shita Lefabo. He is also survived by his grandparents, Robert and Barbara Burns and Jackie Blanchard and Larry Blanchard, his Aunt Shana Burns, Aunt and Uncle Larry and Amanda Blanchard, and Aunt and Uncle Helen and Geoff Noelke and many cousins, chosen family and friends.

Desta was a great all-around athlete. He played on the East Lansing football team. He also enjoyed weightlifting, basketball with friends, cooking, and gaming. Music spoke to his soul. He will be remembered for being Olivia’s best friend and confidant and was the best son ever. Desta was described as an old soul. He was soft-spoken, kind, and accepting of others. He was a hard worker who enjoyed helping others. As quiet as he was, he was always listening, and when Desta spoke up, his friends and family listened because he was wise beyond his years. His calm reassuring presence will be missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave, East Lansing. An on-site reception will follow.

Attendees are invited to wear East Lansing Trojan and Michigan State University team gear. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice that supports children.
