Dorothy “Jean” (Griese) Peterson, age 90, died September 30, 2014. She was born January 1, 1924 in Detroit, MI. Jean attended Denby High School where she was editor of the school newspaper and valedictorian of her senior class. She graduated from the University of Michigan where she was Secretary of her senior class and President of Chi Omega Sorority. Jean married Norman Ward Peterson in 1949 and they moved to East Lansing the following year. Jean was employed by Michigan State University in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and handled the many details of “Farmers’ Week” over 25 years. She was awarded the Distinguished Staff Award in 1979. Jean retired from the Land Management Office in 1979. She was an active member of the MSU Business Women’s Association. After retirement Jean was active in Sparrow Hospital (gift shop) serving as its President in 1997-98, the Christian Art Show of Ascension Lutheran Church, the Chi Omega Alumni Association, and the Haslett Women’s Club.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Norman Ward Peterson in 1978. She is survived by two children: Vicki (Con) Riordon of Wheaton, IL; and Tom (Judy) Peterson of Haslett, MI; 3 grandsons; 2 great-grandsons; one brother, Richard Griese of Oscoda, MI; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2780 Haslett Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 with visitation one hour prior to the service.
