Born into the Schaberg-Dietrich family to parents Kathryne and Arthur Schaberg, our Patriarch passed away on November 2, 2015, a few months after his 90th birthday family celebration. He was a most loved and honored husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, favorite nephew and cousin, business partner and friend. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he returned home, married Barbara McCullagh in 1949, and built the businesses of Schaberg Lumber and Heart Truss & Engineering with his brother, Donald, and longtime partner/friend Don Butcher. He attended Michigan State University, was an MSU ticket holder for 67 years and a charter member of All Saints Episcopal Church. As a man of strength and character, he taught his family the importance of “doing the right thing” by humble example. He honored his beloved wife of 66 years, put others before himself, enjoyed a wide spread community of personal and professional relationships, and was universally loved and respected. He valued his lifelong friends, had a natural ease with babies and children in his arms, and was always the first at the table to pick up the check. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sister and brother in law, Marilyn and Gene Cornelius; children Mary Kaye (Stuart) Goldblatt, Tom (Jill) Schaberg, Curt (Jeanne) Schaberg, Sally (Donn) York; grandchildren, Anna (Brian), Stephen, Maggie (Ryan), Kelsey; great grandchildren, Grace, Louise and Benjamin and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family will receive visitors from 4:00-6:00p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 800 Abbott Rd., East Lansing, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Gerald’s memory to Sparrow Foundation, PO Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909-9986 or to the Salvation Army, 525 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.greastlansing.com.
