“Mr. King”, dedicated teacher in the East Lansing School district for 36 years and born educator passed away suddenly August 9, 2013. Howard was born in Sturgis, MI May 26, 1932 to Elvyn and Frances (Mumby). He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a world traveler but most enjoyed hosting the annual family gathering in Mexico. His quiet, unwavering faith was one of the attributes that drew his wife of 44 years, Joyce (Martinson) to him. He was a dedicated supporter of the University Reformed Church for over 40 years.
Surviving are his wife and daughters Jenna (Christer) Dahlgren and Elizabeth (Russ) Van Der Vliet. He was the extremely proud grandfather of Erik, Freya and Lily Dahlgren and Jack and Claire Van Der Vliet. Also surviving are two sisters Alice Marvin and Lois (Wayne) Widder along with many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 14, 11:00 a.m. at the University Reformed Church, 841 Timberlane St., East Lansing, MI, with Pastor Kevin DeYoung officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and also 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reach Studio Art Center, 1804 S. Washington Ave., Lansing, MI 48910, or Campus Crusade for Christ, 100 Lake Hard Drive, Orlando, FL 32832, in memory of Howard.
