Jean Ellen Chabut, 72, of Okemos, Michigan, passed away July 27, 2014. She was born February 25, 1942, in Morris, Illinois to Don and Elna (Carlson) Caisley. She received her B.S. in Nursing from the State University of Iowa and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan. Jean began her work in public health in 1964 as a nurse for the Detroit Health Department. She had a long, successful career and held many prestigious positions. She was the Deputy Director for Public Health at MDCH, and served in the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Scientific Advisor Committee for the Kidney Foundation of Michigan, and the Policy Advisory Committee for the American Heart Association. Her knowledge and experience enabled her to lead programs in heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes, which have proved valuable on a national scale.
In her leisure time, Jean enjoyed traveling and caring for her pets. She loved her family and was always welcoming to anyone who needed a loving, caring home. She will be greatly missed.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband of nearly 47 years, Hector Chabut; daughter, Jennifer Chabut; sons, Michael Chabut and Sean (Kelly) Chabut; grandchildren, Ella, Jon, and Ava; and brothers, Donald (Mary) Caisley, Jr. and William (Mary) Caisley.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Okemos Community Church, 4734 Okemos Rd, Okemos, MI 48864. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Those desiring may make contributions in memory of Jean to a charity of their choice.
