John D. Shingleton, age 89, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2011. Jack, as he was
known to family and friends, was born in Wyandotte, MI.
He attended Henry Ford Trade School and Southwestern High. After one year at Western Michigan
College, he served as a pilot in the Pacific theatre during World War II. Following the war, he was
reunited with his dear wife, Helen, and they moved to East Lansing where Jack completed his
bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University. Jack subsequently worked at MSU for
38 years serving in multiple capacities including assistant director of Personnel, director
of Placement, administrative officer – College of Engineering, Madras, India, assistant
secretary Board of Trustees, acting Athletic Director, interim director of Alumni
Relations and assistant to President Emeritus, John Hannah. He was the recipient of
multiple academic and administrative awards, including the Senior Class Council Award
for Outstanding Faculty, MSU Distinguished Alumni Award, President’s Award for
Outstanding Service to MSU, MSU Distinguished Alumni Service Award, College
Placement Council Professional of the Year, Midwest College Placement Distinguished
Service Award and the College Placement Council named its annual Research Award in
his name. A widely published author, he wrote many books and articles on the college
placement market including College to Career, Mid Career Changes – Strategies for
Success, Career Planning in the 90’s and Which Niche. Jack retired from MSU in 1987,
but continued his service to the university as a member of the Board of Trustees from
1991-1999, and ultimately as its Chairman.
Jack also enjoyed sports and the great outdoors. He was an intercollegiate tennis
champion, national senior tennis champion and continued playing competitive tennis well
into his 80’s He wrote the tennis book, How to Increase Your Net Value. He was an
avid fly fisherman and took great joy in fishing the rivers of Northern Michigan based out
of his cottage, Shingri-La, on Platte Lake. He also wrote the fishing book, The Trout, the
Whole Trout and Nothing but the Trout.
But with all his many interests and activities, Jack’s first love remained his family. He
was preceded in death by his beloved, Helen, to whom he was married for 56 years.
They had a perfect marriage that epitomized the best of the union of two lives. He is
survived by his daughter, Lori Bratzler (Robert); sons, Bradford (Barbara) ,
Thomas (Patty); granddaughters, Kristin Andrews (Jason), Kari Bratzler, Elizabeth
Glomsrud (Ryan), Jennifer Ewing (Alexander), Rebecca Shingleton; grandson, Tyler
Shingleton; great grandchildren, Emily Andrews and Soren Glomsrud; sister, Lynne Fritz
(Jack).
A memorial service will be held at the Alumni Chapel, Michigan State University on
Monday, March 7, 2011 at 1pm. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday,
March 6, 2011 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730
East Grand River Ave, East Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can
