Born in Detroit on October 4, 1936, Jon was the son of Edward and Marguerite Maire. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elizabeth Griffith, his first wife and mother of his children Joyce Hennings Maire, his second wife Susan Maire, and his beloved son Matthew Maire.
Jon’s life was guided by a strong moral compass, deep intellect, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. He earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctorate from the University of California – Hastings College of the Law. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy’s Officer Candidate School before dedicating over four decades to the people of Ingham County as a prosecutor, judge, and attorney in private practice.
His public service extended far beyond the courtroom. Jon gave generously of his time and wisdom to organizations including the Loaves and Fishes Ministry, the Legal Aid Society in both Michigan and Georgia, the establishment of the Christian Conciliation Services, The Habersham School, and his local church, where he served faithfully. His devotion to Christ was the anchor of his life, and his mission work—both internationally and within his own community—was a testament to a servant-hearted life lived in quiet strength.
A voracious reader and lifelong learner, Jon was known for his profound intellect, gentle humility, and deep kindness. He was deeply respected by colleagues, admired by friends, and treasured by his family.
He is survived by his daughter Julie (Maire) Turner; grandchildren Sarah, Meagan, Erin, Noelle, Grant, and Lauren; and a wide circle of extended family, and beloved friends who were blessed by his presence.
A memorial gathering celebrating Jon’s life and legacy will be held Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave. East Lansing, MI 48823.
To honor Jon’s legacy of faith and service, memorial contributions may be made to 412 Ministry (https://www.ministry412.com/) or United Services for Children (https://unitedservicesforchildren.org/) organizations that reflect his lifelong commitment to compassion and action. Supporting these missions is a meaningful way to carry forward the values he lived by.
Jon lived without concern for recognition or praise; he sought no credit, only to reflect the love and grace of Jesus Christ in all he did. If you saw anything good in him, he would want you to know it came from his faith—not from himself. His life pointed quietly but powerfully to a Savior he loved above all else.
His was a life well-lived in service to others, guided by grace and anchored in faith. We rejoice in knowing he has now heard the words: "Well done, good and faithful servant."
