Mark was born in South Bend, Indiana, on December 29, 1959 to Robert J. Hostetler and Agnes Mae (McMahon) Hostetler. He grew up in Ann Arbor, alongside the “Middleton Drive Boys”, who became lifelong friends and with whom he both enjoyed many adventures and developed a lasting bond, which he cherished.
Mark was a gifted student and athlete, running cross country at Huron High School. He started college in 1978 as a student-athlete at Hope College on the cross-country team. He later transferred to the University of Michigan, where he completed his undergraduate studies in 1981 and his dental degree in 1985. Mark was a lifelong Wolverine sports fan, especially enjoying Michigan football and basketball.
Mark practiced dentistry for over 40 years and was known for his skill, dedication, and care for his patients. He was a longtime member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, and Central District Dental Society. Spanning more than three decades of leadership, his contributions to the dental profession will be long remembered. He served 22 years on the state peer review committee, six of those as chair, and nine years on the Ethics Committee, where he spent two years as chair.
Mark and his wife, Alicia, were married for 36 years. They enjoyed many years of travel and friendship in addition to watching their family grow. Mark was a devoted father to his four sons and took great pride in their accomplishments and in supporting their many activities. After coaching basketball, baseball, and soccer for many years, he became a steadfast volunteer of the DeWitt Band Boosters for over a decade. In his free time, Mark could usually be found at the puzzle table, in his reading chair, on the phone with bourbon buddy Dan, or quietly watching the sun set over Lake Michigan.
Mark was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mae Hostetler. He is survived by his wife, Alicia; his sons, Benjamin, Michael (Allison Maebius), Alexander (Alexandra), and Stephen (Courtney McKown). He is survived by his siblings, Lori Hostetler (Michael Petersen), and Dr. Robert Hostetler (Nancy); in-laws, Dr. George and Mary Ann Mansour, and brother-in-law, Philip. Mark’s three nieces, Sarah, Ellia, and Corinne hold a special place in his heart. Favorite Uncle, Joseph McMahon, and his other brothers, Chris, Doug, and Jim, will miss him greatly.
Mark’s favorite new role was grandpa to George. He cherished spending time with him and loved sharing photos and stories of his grandson.
Mark was deeply grateful to his long-time friend, mentor, and business partner, Dr. William Schoonover.
