Born on June 25, 1936, in New York City to Max Kaufman and Ann Fraas, Dr. Kaufman pursued an impressive career in medicine and served his community with dedication. In 1960, he married Lois M. Ferber in Millington, Michigan, and together they built a loving family and life.
Dr. Kaufman completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before earning his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He began his medical practice in Cumberland, Maryland, achieving board certification in Internal Medicine and later specializing in Pulmonology and Infectious Diseases. His career included teaching at Michigan State University’s Medical School and practicing at Ingham Medical Center in Lansing. He later held roles as Chief Medical Officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections, Disability Review Physician for the State of Michigan, and Medical Examiner for Ingham County.
He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as an Airborne Radio Intercept Operator on RB-29 and RB-50 aircraft during the Cold War, learning Mandarin Chinese at Yale University as part of his service.
Dr. Kaufman was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, and later, target shooting at the Capital City Rifle Club. He was a dedicated reader, a loyal supporter of the Republican Party, and, most of all, a devoted father who took great joy in time spent with his children. After the passing of his wife, Lois, in 1992, he lovingly cared for their daughter Laura, who has special needs, for 32 years.
He is survived by his sons Jon (Lisa) Kaufman of Mendon, MA; Timothy (Beth) Kaufman of St. Charles, MI; Mark Kaufman of Bay City, MI; and his daughter Laura Anne Kaufman of East Lansing, MI. He also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren: Nicole Kaufman, Christopher Kaufman, and Madeline Kaufman. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois, in 1992, and by his eldest son, Matthew Jr. (Martha) Kaufman, in 2021.
A private service for family was held at Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing, MI.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dad’s friends and neighbors for their kindness and support. Thank you, Dad, for your wisdom, guidance, and the love you shared. You will always be remembered as a remarkable role model and a beloved father.
