(supplimental message) Please know that we can recall with a smile, some of the many graciously given days, including one when Matthew and his brothers would knock on the door and ask "Can your Dad come out?"...this near after one of the days in which there were hobby rockets launched into the air from our circle...an adventure that went over great, with the kids. They were some of the cutest moments...both watching the rocket launch enthusiasm and wonder...and his looks at the door with curiosity and inquiry to see if we could do it again. Just as with those attempts for him and for us to reach to the sky as far as we could...so it will be with our memories of Matthew as we go forward. Having known him and having been with him, our opportunity is to let his wonder and curiosity, along with his smile, shine through with reach, as we live and as we attempt our endeavors ahead.

We are saddened with the passing of Matthew. Our thoughts and prayers for Matthew and for you and all, abound with sympathy. As we struggle to grasp what is real, we still know that Matthew has made an impression that is alive within you and with incredible reach all of us...and with confidence so many others. My condolences and I know it will be very hard for your family without Matt, but try to remember the great times you had with Matt and hopefully this will help you get through the day. I have great memories with Matt on the Okemos Swim Team. Matt was there everyday morning and evening at practice working very hard and pushing himself to become a better swimmer. I was googling the Kolstoe name- to see if there were something to read about my american family. I was really shocked reading about the accident, and I will tell you that your norwegian family feels with you in this difficult time.

Dear Kolstoe Family,

We are so very sorry for your great loss. Our prayers are with you all. The Cashers have been close to the Kolstoe family since Aidan and my son, Cameron, were in kindergarten together. Thereafter, Cameron and the twins were the best of friends as Cam had one or the other in his class each year at Cornell. I coached Matt and Aidan for several years in Oaks baseball, and the three boys attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. They spent many nights together with sleep-overs either at our house or theirs. We were happy to share many happy occasions with the Kolstoe family, as they joined us in celebration of all three Casher kids' Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and most recently, Cam and Matt were swim teammates at Okemos High School, the League Champions.

Matt was a good kid with a sweet soul. He will be missed.

Dear Kolstoe Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  My daughter was killed in a car accident 7 1/2 years ago.  She was one of the teenagers that was killed in the Fowlerville accident the summer of 2003 that claimed the lives of 4 teens.  I understand your pain at this time and I pray that God's presence and comfort surround your family.  I now facilitate a grief support group specific to parents who have lost a child.  I hope I can be of some help to you in the coming months.

"I thought Gail summarized Matt well in a comment last night.  

At the candlelight vigil the two girls stated that 
Heather was going to save the world and 
Sarina was going to change the world
Then Gail commented “Matt was going to enjoy the world!”

That is a good description of Matt.  No matter the situation, he was going to enjoy it and help those around him enjoy it too.  

My cousins and I have many memories from Grace Lake when our family would get together in the summertime.  

And at the lake there were many rules!  Matt saw these rules as….more like guidelines, and so did the rest of us, though Matt had more of a comedic approach.  And since they were our Minnnesota twins, sometimes they were double-trouble, add Alex into the mix and you triple the fun.

There were rules about 
computer usage and TV watching, 
how to clean the marshmallow sticks,
which door you can walk in 
AND having to back up after lighting the firecrackers, DUH

Unfortunately, Matthew and Aidan being the youngest of the 9 grandchildren, plus having three aunts and three uncles around, AND our grandparents….they had MANY people reminding them of these rules.
I have to say, in all of these experiences, Matt sure knew how to make life fun and see the humor in everday events!  He was always having a good time and enjoying life. 
 
So I guess I’d say, a basic theme of Matthew was not to take life too seriously and always make sure you’re laughing." Read October 14th 2010

We had just moved into the neighborhood and they came over for a "play date" with Shannon.  They caught a baby squirrel, brought it into the house and Matt said "Can we keep it?"  Well you can guess....I said no and we set it free.

We little knew that morning that god would call your name. In life we loved you dearly in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day god called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but as god calls us one by one the chain will link again.
