Died Thursday, August 18, 2011 shortly after celebrating his 84th birthday. Born August 17, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Erik Axel and Nellie (Holmgren) Eriksson.
Richard served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. His love for the sea carried over into later life as he and his wife, Joan, visited different oceans around the world, including the South Pacific, North Atlantic, Caribbean, Pacific and Arctic oceans.
He married Joan Marie Steckel on April 10, 1954 in Elkhart, Indiana. They moved to the mid-Michigan area shortly thereafter. Dick worked for the State of Michigan Department of Treasury, in various assignments over a 35 year career, including working on the early implementation of computers within the department. He also worked as an Investment Officer with the state pension system and later with the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
He is survived by his wife, sons, two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the University Lutheran Church, 1020 South Harrison Road, East Lansing, Michigan on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. A private burial service will be held at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the University Lutheran Church or Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, c/o Ron Smolka, 15863 Alexander, Livonia, MI 48154.
