

Richard of East Lansing, age 80, passed away at home on January 11, 2016. He was born to Elmer and Wilma Hanna of Harbor Springs, Michigan on November 13, 1935. He lived in Harbor Springs until age 7 when they moved to East Lansing. He graduated from East Lansing High School and MSC/MSU in 1962, including 2 years in ROTC. While attending college he worked for MI Hwy Department Research lab and was the co-inventor of the MI Nuclear Density Gage. He also worked for the MI Department of Civil Services and the Department of Social Services, retiring in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Robson Hanna, married for 57 years and their four daughters, Catherine (Nick) Eastman, Mary (Henry) Morley, Ellen (Steve) Trecha, and Jennifer (Blaine) Sochor; 13 grandchildren, Jacob and Luke Eastman; Jordan (Ryan) Larsen, Matthew, Erik and Alexandra Trecha; Emily, Melissa and Amanda Morley; Paul, Sarah, Molly and Anna Sochor. He is also survived by his brother, Murray Hanna and 19 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Gordon Hanna and a nephew. He loved playing tennis, motorcycling, reading for pleasure and also to increase his knowledge. He enjoyed many summers at the family farm near Charlevoix, and winter time spent in Melbourne Beach, Florida. He also enjoyed running, basketball, white water rafting, boating, full contact trivia, spending time with the Old Crocks, and Buffets. A Celebration Luncheon of Richard’s life will be held at the St. John Church and Student Center, 327 M. A. C. Ave, East Lansing, MI 48823 on February 13, 2016 at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, give smiles and hugs or donate to the food bank of your choosing. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI.
