Age 91, made his transition February 25, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was a firefighter and later Chief of the Meridian Township Fire Department. After retirement he remained dedicated to helping others and enjoyed being a Sparrow volunteer. He was a member of Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Lansing Liederkranz Club. Richard enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, and spending time at ‘the lake’. Known to the family as ‘Mr. Christmas’, he embodied the Christmas spirit. He considered everyone a friend and above all he loved being a husband, Dad and Grandpa. He is survived by the love of his live, his wife of 54 years Lorraine; his children Patricia McKane of Okemos and Michael (Mistie) McKane of St. Johns; his sister Margaret Setzer of Bear Lake; his grandchildren Charles and James McKane of St. Johns; several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all the cooks and caregivers at Timber Ridge Assisted Living of East Lansing who through their dedicated and compassionate care made the last few years of his life enjoyable. The relationships he developed at Timber Ridge will always remain special in many hearts. The family is also grateful to the care provided by Heartland Hospice. Services will be Thursday March 1, 11:00 am at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E Grand River Ave., East Lansing. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 29, 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1001 N.
