Died June 8, 2012 at the age of 91. Robert was born August 15, 1920 in Ada, MI to Clyde W. and Zoe (Collar) Overholt. He lettered in basketball at Williamston High School; completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at MSU and played a coronet in the marching band. He received his D.D.S. degree from U of M’s School of Dentistry. He served his country in the US Navy during WWII in the dental corps from 1943-1946. Robert practiced as a dentist in East Lansing and Lansing for 42 years. He was a member of the American College of Dentists and the American Dental Association. He was one of the founders and past president of the Delta Dental Plan of Michigan. Robert’s work with Delta increased access to dental care for people across Michigan and U.S. He was also a founder of Camp Highfields. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing; served at All Saints Episcopal Church on the vestry, and upon his retirement, was actively involved in a local inventors’ group. He was an early and continuing supporter of the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts. MSU conferred upon him membership in the Beaumont Tower Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Zoe and sister, Hilda Wakefield. Surviving are his wife, Frances; two sons, David C. (Teresa Norton) Overholt and Robert Peter (Leticia) Overholt; daughter Nancy Jane (Hilton Root) Overholt; grandchildren Margaret Frances Overholt and Robert Maxwell Overholt.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 11, 4-6 p.m. at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing, MI. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Highfields, Inc., P.O. Box 98, Onondaga, MI 48854 in memory of Robert.
