Sandra Galasso, 99, of East Lansing and formerly of Carlsbad, CA, and Huntington Woods, MI, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024. She was born on October 6, 1924, in Detroit, MI.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Carlo and Maria Saragosa, her loving husband of 62 years, Angelo Galasso, her brothers, Anthony (Francis) Saragosa, Felice (Josephine) Saragosa, and Gregory (Elvira) Saragosa, and her sister Ann (Ralph) Balcom.
Sandra was the dear mother of Vincent (Susie) Galasso and Sharon (Bill) Tuma. She was the proud grandmother of Kristine (John) Kelly, Bill (Janelle) Tuma, and Maggie (Eric) Frommholz. She was blessed with three great grandchildren who she adored, James Tuma, Katherine Kelly, and Juliana Tuma. She also is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Like many of their generation, Sandra and Angelo weathered the challenge of WWII. About two years after they married, Angelo was drafted into the Army, leaving Sandra to raise five month old Vincent until Angelo returned two and a half years later.
Sandra and Angelo raised Vincent and Sharon in a loving and nurturing home. Sandra was a dedicated homemaker, cooking many fabulous Italian dishes. She made an excellent spaghetti sauce and the most delicious meatballs. Her ravioli and gnocchi were family favorites.
Sandra’s faith was strong and she attended church regularly. Sandra and Angelo were among the first to be called by their church in California if a dinner needed to be planned. Sandra faithfully prayed for those on her prayer list every morning until she passed.
After Angelo passed away, Sandra remained very active at her senior living facilities in both California and East Lansing. She attended weekly Bible study, was an avid bingo player, and played an excellent hand of pinochle. Sandra was instrumental in forming a knitting club at each of the three facilities where she lived. She, along with several very devoted ladies, made baby hats for newborn infants, and beautiful hats, mittens, shawls, blankets, scarves, and slippers to be donated to children and adults in need.
Sandra led an incredible life. She exhibited a zest for life and always found joy in helping others. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her funeral service will be Saturday, August 10th in East Lansing. A private burial will take place at a later date at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Michigan.
May she rest in peace.
