She was born in Jackson, Michigan, in 1943 to Carns W. and Myrna (O'Brien) Powers. After graduation from Jackson High School, Sarah earned a degree in elementary education from Michigan State University. She dedicated her career to the Lansing School District as an elementary teacher and librarian.
Sarah married Frederick Hawley of Jackson in 1964. Together, they lived and raised a family in Lansing and then Okemos. Sarah was the very proud mother of Eric and Tanya of Marblehead, MA; Christopher and Emily of Mason; and Robin and Tom Howell of Hillsboro, OR. She admired and loved her grandchildren, Kiana Hawley, Andualem Hawley, and Jake Howell.
She is also survived by her brother Norman (Sally) Powers and his family; cousins including close cousin, Barbara Flowers; nieces and nephews.
In retirement, Sarah continued her participation in two book groups where she had many meaningful friendships. She also dedicated her time and found great satisfaction in many volunteer activities. She was very passionate about her work with Forster Woods Adult Day Center where she also served on the board. Wharton Center and Sparrow Hospital were also benefactors of her time and efforts. She was a member of St. Katherine's Episcopal Church where she was especially devoted to outreach ministries.
