Born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, on September 24, 1946, Scott was the son of the late Gaylord and Margaret "Peg" McGill. He was deeply committed to education, earning degrees from Allegheny College, New York University, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. During his undergraduate years at Allegheny College, Scott also participated in ROTC, and he went on to serve in the United States Air Force as a meteorologist.
In 1970, Scott married Cathleen A. Chaffin in Omaha, Nebraska, and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Together, they raised two daughters, Kelly McGill-Barrett (Tyler Barrett) and Kerry McElmurry (Robert McElmurry). Scott is also survived by his sister, Cinda Fait (Lance, Jacob, and Sarah).
Scott and Cathy moved to East Lansing in 1988 and Scott served as an IT administrator and Executive for the Michigan State University IT department. Scott was an avid Spartan and attended basketball and football home games for several decades.
Scott found immense joy in his role as a grandfather to four grandsons: Ryan and Jack Barrett, and Max and Cade McElmurry. He cherished the time he spent with them, especially during the holiday season when he took great delight in playing the role of "Santa."
A man of wide-ranging interests, Scott was an active participant in many organizations over the years, but he especially valued his time with the Kiwanis Club and the International Order of the Rocky Mountain Goats and served as East Lansing Herd Sire. He loved to travel, and he found great peace and enjoyment in fishing, particularly when shared with his friends and family. Even in his later years, when he resided in a Memory Care unit, Scott's sharp wit and sense of humor never wavered.
Scott's legacy will be remembered for his kindness, his devotion to family, his zest for life, and we will all miss the "Old Goat".
Scott will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing, Michigan with a private family burial.
