

He graduated from Nanjing University in 1986 and completed his Ph.D. at Melbourne University in 1992. After marrying his wife, Yu Qiu, in 1996, he spent the next two years at the University of Cambridge Department of Material Science completing his postdoctoral research. He then immigrated to the United States, where he worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee before moving to Michigan. From 2001 to 2022, Xudong worked at Michigan State University’s Center for Advanced Microscopy.
Outside of work, Xudong led an exciting and healthy lifestyle. He was an avid biker, runner, and swimmer, participating in the DALMAC bike tour from Lansing to the Mackinac Bridge in 2016 and the Hawk Island Triathlon in 2018. While he had been a world traveler for decades, in recent years he also embarked on many biking adventures overseas. He biked through the Kunlun and Animaqin Mountains of China, Qinghai Lake, the Kekexili region of the Tibetan Plateau, and most recently, Annapurna in Nepal. Xudong had a wide variety of other hobbies as well, from cooking and film photography to cross country skiing.
Xudong is survived by his wife Yu Qiu, children Gucci and Hugo, his mother Dr. Julin Peng, sister Dr. Yanan Fan, father-in-law Dr. Shuye Qiu, siblings-in-law Dr. Wei Qiu and Xia An, niece Cassini, nephews Cormac and Zian, and many cousins across the world. He is preceded in death by his father, Dr. Depei Fan, and mother-in-law, Xiuying Zou.
In addition to his friends and family in China, Australia, and the United States, Xudong is also fondly remembered by many classmates and friends from Nanjing Fourth Middle School (Class of 1982) and the Nanjing University Physics Department (Class of 1986).
A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, August 21 from 1:00 - 1:30pm with a Celebration of Life at 1:30pm, at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave, East Lansing, MI 48823. 范旭东,2022年八月九日凌晨于密西根家中病逝,终年56岁。旭东1986年毕业于南京大学物理系,1996年于澳大利亚墨尔本大学获得物理学博士学位。1996年,旭东前往英国剑桥大学材料科学系进行为期两年的博士后研究,之后,旭东来到美国田纳西州橡树岭国家实验室进行为期三年的博士后研究。2001年直至病逝,旭东一直任教于密西根州立大学高级电镜中心,主管透射电镜。
工作之余,旭东享受健康丰富多彩的生活。他是一个骑行爱好者,热爱跑步和游泳,2016年参加DALMAC 骑行活动从首府兰辛骑到麦基诺岛,2018年参加鹰岛铁人三项比赛。旭东也是一个旅行者,近几年他骑行穿越昆仑山,阿尼玛卿,青海湖,可可西里无人区,今年五月,旭东骑行了尼泊尔的安纳布尔纳山区。除此之外,旭东也热爱烹饪,胶片机,和越野滑雪。
除了他在中国,澳大利亚,和美国的家人和朋友,旭东也深受他南京四中82届和南京大学86届同学和朋友的喜爱和怀念。
