

Dorothy M. Smith, 99, of Land O’ Lakes, FL, formally of College Park, GA, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 13, 2012. She was born in Atlanta, on December 31, 1912 to Annie P. and James V. Morris, Sr, the first born of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, O’Neil Smith, infant brother, Jack, and brothers, James (Jim) Morris, Jr., and Louie Morris. She is survived by her sister, Lucy Goldsmith, Houston, TX, daughter, Victoria Lynne (Smith) Smith (Terry), Land O Lakes, FL, granddaughters, Kellie Bryant (Greg), Karla Moorhead (John), Korrie Smith, Kara Sage (Todd), six great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Elise, Trevor and Parker Bryant, Gabriel and Michael Moorhead, sister-in-law, Marjorie (Louie)Morris and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was a devoted Born Again Christian. She joined Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, FL after moving to Land O’Lakes in 2004 at age 92. She had also been a member of McDonough Road Baptist Church in Fayetteville, GA and Second Baptist Church and Flat Rock Baptist Church in College Park, GA. She had a loving spirit, a compassion for others, and was always concerned about the spiritual life of those she met. She was committed to sharing God’s word and was an active volunteer in Christian service, working as a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and Christian Child Care provider.
Dorothy was always dedicated to her community and was a Girl Scout Leader, involved with the PTA program, and active in the Garden Club and Home Demonstration Club of Clayton County, GA. She was an energetic worker and had been employed as a Sales Representative and Display Arranger for several jewelry stores in Atlanta. After staying home to raise her daughter, she returned to work as a Merchandiser with the Big Apple Food Stores in East Point, GA.
Dorothy enjoyed a full life and was enthusiastic, active, and surrounded by those who loved her to the end. She enjoyed her Sunday School class, the Senior Center at Land O Lakes, traveling with her family, and attending school and athletic events for her grandchildren. She was instrumental in shaping the lives of her daughter, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren and was the heart of every family gathering.
Dorothy’s cause of death was due to complications following hip replacement surgery. Our world has lost a wonderful and beloved person who will truly be missed, but knowing that she is now living eternally with her Heavenly Father brings her family and friends great comfort, peace, and joy.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 11 am, visitation begins at 10am at McDonough Road Baptist Church, 352 McDonough Road, Fayetteville, GA 30214. Interment will follow the service at College Park Cemetery in College Park, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McDonough Road Baptist Church Building Fund (770) 460-5423.
