Doris Martin Starnes

Doris was born July 27, 1927 near Trion, Georgia. She was the second of three children born to Enos Elijah and Sadie Lucille Martin. Doris grew up on the farm and assumed much responsibility for running the household at an early age. She graduated from Menlo High School as valedictorian of her class and as a young adult attended McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga, TN while living at the YWCA.

Doris worked as a secretary for several years at General Electric in Chattanooga before she quit the workplace to become a full-time mother at home in 1955. In later years she returned to the workplace, finally retiring as office manager for many years for Orthodontist, Dr. Stephen Sawrie.

Doris accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in her youth. Jesus is precious to her!

She was a faithful and longtime member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, brother, James Martin, and sister, Kathryn Hutchins, Doris was preceded in death by her sweet husband Louie, by whom she was married for 67 years before his death in 2014.

Doris is survived by her daughter Carol (Bobby) Higdon of Hixson, TN; son Randy (Becky) Starnes of Bloomington, IL; granddaughter Dr. Sarah Starnes of St.Louis, MO; grandson Jared (Gretchen) Starnes of Wylie, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

A heartfelt thanks to Doris' special friend and caretaker, Marcina Griffith. Also special thanks for the wonderful care provided by Hospice of Chattanooga.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Friday, August 18 at the funeral home.

Services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 19 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 10:30 AM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga.
