

Edwin (Eddie) E. Howard, 91, of Chattanooga, died peacefully at his home on Friday, February 26, 2016. He was a devoted husband of 66 years and loving father of two children and four grandchildren. He was a native of Chattanooga, the son of the late Lavoy Mitchell and Anne Belle Jones Howard Preceded in death by his brother, Mitchell Howard and his beautiful wife, Patricia Howard who died in 2013.
He was inducted into the United States Army in July 6, 1943 at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia. He served in the Ascension Islands for 12 months during WW II.
A self-made man, Eddie built his own architectural firm where he designed many notable buildings in Chattanooga.
Locally, he actively and graciously participated in his local Civitan Club for 45 years, serving as president of the club from 1978 – 1979. He was awarded the Honor Key in 1978 and given the T. C. Thompson Award in 2004. He served as Governor in the Appalachian District of Civitan in 1986 and 1987 where he was given the Disguised Governor’s Award. He was instrumental in establishing several junior Civitan Clubs in the Chattanooga High Schools.
Eddie always had a project underway. Whether creating a quarterly newsletter for his fellow Central High School Alumni, tending to the expansive lawn of the families home on Wolftever Creek or installing a patio in the yard, he liked to stay busy and active.
His other hobbies were playing the organ and flying as a pilot in private aircraft and playing golf.
Surviving are his daughter, Marlene H. Miller of Marietta, GA; son, Vernon (Yukie) Howard of Jacksonville, FL.; twin grandchildren, Jessica Miller, Jennifer Miller, Kevin Howard and Kris Howard and great-grandchild Alexander Howard; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be two grandsons, Kevin and Kris Howard, Henry Crine, T. Best, Dillard Edgemon and Joe Robbins.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Chattanooga Civitan Club.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Chattanooga Civitan Club Community Projects Fund.
