Lewis Payne

Lewis Franklin Payne, 80, of Signal Mountain, TN passed away Saturday, August 3, 2019. He was born in Sweetens Cove, Lodge, South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Mr. Payne was a long time resident of Chattanooga, most recently in the Lone Oak Community of Signal Mountain. He was retired from Combustion Engineering and a retired veteran serving in the United States Navy on active duty from 1957 to 1967, active United States Navy reserve from 1973 to 1983 and inactive United States Navy reserve until his retirement in 1999. During his tours of service he attained the rank of CPO E7. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Dona M. Haggard Payne, his father John Elmer Payne, his mother Elizabeth M. Payne both of Sweetens Cove, brother Houston A. Payne of Stevenson, Alabama and half brother Lewis A. Sumpter of Los Molinos, California. Graveside services will be held at 1 PM Thursday, August 8 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday and from 11AM to 12:30PM Thursday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home 404 S. Moore Road. The family wishes to express their thanks to the physicians, nursing staff and support individuals of CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga for their care of Lewis and Hearth Hospice Chattanooga for its outstanding staff of nurses, chaplains and family counselors. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Morning Pointe of Chattanooga, Shallowford Road for the love and care given to Lewis by the entire staff of outstanding people. Thank you for providing him a place to call home. May God bless every person who touched Lewis with loving care.
