

Mary Barrows Jackson, former professor and founder of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga School of Nursing died on November 12, 2015. She was born to the late Roy M. Barrows Sr. and Nina McKenzie Barrows and raised on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Joseph A. Jackson, brothers Charles S. Barrows, R. Earl Barrows, Roy M. Barrows Jr., and Robert K. Barrows.
She is survived by her nephew, Roy M. (Marty) Barrows III, and wife Babs, great nieces Tabitha (Gregg) and Rachael (Joe), great nephew, Joseph and great-great nieces and nephews, Kinsley, Kaiden, and Spencer; niece Bonnie Shiver and husband Jack of Mobile, Alabama, several other special nieces and nephews, and many special relatives and friends.
Mary was educated in the Hamilton County Schools and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1944. She graduated from the Baroness Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1947, and was a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, and served as a Lt. in the Army Nurse Corps Reserve for seven and half years. She held a B.S degree from the University of Chattanooga, and a BSN and MSN from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Professor Jackson served in many capacities during her nursing career including Director of Nursing Education and Nursing Service at the Baroness Erlanger Hospital; staff nurse, VA Hospital, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Assistant Professor, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Associate; and Full Professor Emeritus, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Mrs. Jackson started the School of Nursing at the University of Tennessee in 1972.
Mrs. Jackson served in a variety of professional and community service organizations including president of the Pilot Clubs of Tuscaloosa, AL and Chattanooga, TN, Tennessee Society Colonial Dames of the XVII Century Prudhomme Fort Chapter, and the Moccasin Bend Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on November 14, 2015, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The service will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Brad Whitaker. She will be laid to rest at the Chattanooga National Cemetery in a private interment. Pallbearers for the service are: Ronny Barrows, Andrew Barrows, Logan VanLeigh, Joseph Barrows, Gregg Norris, and Joe Moyer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Homeless Health Care Center and the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
