Watching the news, I frequently think that Civics needs to be brought back as a required class in secondary education.  Somehow, I felt compelled to seek out "Er" today, only to be saddened by the news of his passing.  Lessons in American Government aside, Mr. Ashlock was the embodiment of being soft spoken but making a lot of "noise". 

He was my  8th grade Civics teacher and faculty advisor. He was very patient with me as I navigated my way through McCallie. I use lessons learned in his class almost daily. He taught us how politics work, and by extension, how the world works. He had a warm smile and a great sense of humor, and he could sharpen a pencil with a Swiss Army knife like nobody's business.
