

Barbara Gail Leitner Samet, 77, of East Stroudsburg, died peacefully on November 3, 2014 at Pocono Medical Center. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, teacher, realtor, realtor educator, community leader, and ardent traveler. Born May 23, 1937 at the General Hospital of Monroe County, she was the daughter of Moses Jonathan Leitner, MD and Betty Miller Leitner, RN.
As a child in Bushkill she accompanied her father on house calls, sometimes on horseback. She graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1953, married in 1954, earned a bachelor’s degree in education from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in 1957, and earned a master’s degree in political science from East Stroudsburg State College in 1966. She was a sixth grade teacher in the East Stroudsburg School District from 1966 to 1984 and was always delighted to see her many former students. She began her real estate career in 1977, and opened Barbara G. Samet Real Estate and the Pocono Real Estate Academy in 1981.
She served as the president of the Pocono Mountains Association of Realtors on four separate occasions and has served on the boards of the American Cancer Society, the Pocono Family YMCA, the Greater Pocono Chamber of Commerce, the Pocono Medical Center Ambassador Board, and the United Way of Monroe County, where she served as the Annual Campaign Chairperson in 2006. She has also contributed her time and efforts to the Pocono Area Transitional Housing (PATH), the Monroe County Affordable Housing Board, and the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe (AWSOM). She was honored as the “Citizen of the Year” by the Greater Pocono Chamber of Commerce in 1992 and was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Area School District Meritorious Hall of Fame in 2011. She adored her grandchildren and her greatest joy was traveling the world with them.
She is survived by her son Todd Samet and his wife Suzann of Petaluma, California; daughter Laurie Samet of East Stroudsburg and her companion Bill Goodwin of Delaware Water Gap; daughter Melissa Samet and her husband Michael Leperi, of San Anselmo, California; beloved grandchildren Austen Samet of Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Samet of Petaluma, California, and Mark Samet of Santa Barbara, California; sister Carole Duvoisin of Adelaide, Australia; niece Danielle Duvoisin of Adelaide, Australia; nephew Michel Duvoisin of Rye, East Sussex, England; her adored cat Winston; and many, many friends.
A Celebration of Barbara’s life will be held Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 2;00 PM at the Terra View building at the Stroudsmoor, Stroudsmoor Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe (AWSOM) Godfrey Ridge Dr, Stroudsburg or the Pocono Family YMCA 809 Main St, Stroudsburg.
