
She was born on April 2, 1924 in Knoxville, TN; Helen was a daughter to the late Harvey and Ada Crisp Smith and graduated from Young’s High School, in Knoxville, TN. Helen was employed by the United States Army as a secretary stationed in Germany. She returned to the states and was employed in Ft. Lewis, Washington State, as a records clerk, and continued her employment with the United States Army at Ft. Belvoir, VA; as a secretary for the Academic Director, for West Point. Helen and was last employed by the California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara, Calf; where she enjoyed working as an office supervisor in the dispatch department, where she retired in 1984 after 20 years of service.
She was an active member of East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, East Stroudsburg where she volunteered for many years as a secretary, the East Stroudsburg American Legion George N. Kemp Post 346, East Stroudsburg and the VFW in Speckles, CA; Helen loved to stay active. She enjoyed collecting stamps, gardening, reading, cross stitch, knitting, and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lewis M. Staples on October 6, 2011, a sister Daisy Ann Babb.
Surviving are a daughter Rebecca Del Coco and her husband Eugene of East Stroudsburg; a son Donald Tomlinson of Santa Maria, CA; a sister Louise Weaver of Amarillo, TX; two brothers Robert Smith and his wife Helen of Tucson, AZ; and Walter Smith and his wife Muriel of Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren Kristin, John and Matthew .
Funeral services will be held on Saturday September 22, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 85 South Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg with her Pastor Rev, Dr. Edward Kimes officiating. Interment will follow in Laurelwood Cemetery, Bryant Street, Stroudsburg.
A pubic visitation will be held on Friday evening September 21, 2012 at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 27 Washington Street East Stroudsburg from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P. M.
A second visitation will be held September 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.
