
Born in Newark, NJ on February 18, 1928, he was a son to the late Charles and Florence (Westin) Mayer.
Richard graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, NJ. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge he attended and graduated from Rutgers School of Pharmacy, in New Brunswick, NJ. Richard began his career as a pharmacist working with his father for 23 years as Co-owner of Chatham Pharmacy, in Chatham, NJ and owned and operated his own pharmacy known as Mayer’s Pharmacy in Irvington, NJ. In his later years he worked part time as a floating pharmacist for Rite Aid Corp. Pharmacies.
Richard was a member of the Kawanis Club and the Country Club of the Poconos Men’s poker club. He enjoyed vacationing and cruising to the Caribbean and Europe, gambling, gardening, playing tennis, and basketball. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed dinning out with his loving wife, Barbara, of 56 years.
He enjoyed shopping at Hardware stores and the five and dime stores. To know Richard was to love him, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but forever in their hearts.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Barbara (Alenick) Mayer, of East Stroudsburg; two daughters: Jodi Moran and her husband John, of Laytonsville, MD and Jacki Mayer, of Fairborn, OH; a son: James Mayer and his wife Randi, of Riverwoods, IL; three grandchildren: Michael Moran, Brandon and Scottie Mayer.
Memorial Service will be held on Sunday February 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Rabbi Daniel Franzel, officiating at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home Inc., 27 Washington Street East Stroudsburg. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
