Growing up in a household of 7 children in Fort Collins, Colorado, “Moose” had many stories of family escapades he loved to tell involving his brothers and sisters and parents. He enjoyed playing basketball for the Ft. Collins Lambkins and working at the local movie theater. Growing up in Colorado he was a lifelong fan of the Buffaloes and his Denver Broncos. Soon after graduating high school in 1951 Gene enlisted in the US Army and served our country during the Korean War. While in Korea he developed a lifelong passion for film and production.
Upon returning from the war his adventure continued as he enrolled and attended Film School in New York City. Upon finishing he moved to Ada, Ok for a short time then on to Oklahoma City where in 1958 he began his job with WKY-TV / KFOR for 25 years as a Studio Broadcast Engineer. While part of the daily newscast Gene also produced popular shows like the “Wallace Wildlife Show”, “The Scene” with Ronnie Kaye, and did the audio for the Buck Owens show. Moose’s years at Channel 4 were his favorite professionally and he loved to tell stories about his years there but even more so loved playing pranks on his co-workers. He enjoyed his friends there immensely and talked often about the Barry’s, the Ogle’s, Linda Cavanaugh, Greg, and Charline, among many others.
During his time working at Channel 4 he began to moonlight filming and producing commercials and shows on the side, and eventually started his own business full time by the mid 1980’s and Moose Productions became his life’s work. Moose turned out commercials that we all saw repeatedly throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
Soon after he made the move to OKC, he met the prettiest girl and talked her into a date. She always said he was the funniest guy and made her laugh and the couple quickly fell in love. On April 8, 1961 he married the love of his life; Gene and Ginger were married for 64 years and had 2 daughters, Valerie and Keri. Keri kept Gene busy throughout her high school and college years, and in 2001 she gave Gene his favorite job title yet: Grandpa.
Gapa was one of the first words out of his twin grandson’s mouths and he had a special bond with them instantly. Big Moose always had the biggest smile when he saw Grant and Drew and got to spend time with them often. His favorite project soon combined his three favorite things: grandsons, sports, and video. He spent countless hours filming their games, from T-Ball to college football, and everything in between.
At 93 years old, Gene, a devout Christian, got to go home to see his daughter, his siblings, and his Lord. Now we celebrate an adventurous life well lived. Go Rest High on that Colorado Mountain, Moose.
A celebration of life for Gene will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Baggerley Funeral Home, 930 South Broadway, Edmond, OK 73034.
