

Dr. Joseph Steven Hargis, known to friends and family as Steve, passed away on August 15, 2024, in Edmond, Oklahoma. Born on October 26, 1946, in Joplin, Missouri, Steve was the beloved son of Joseph R. Hargis and Beatrice Adkins Hargis. Steve’s academic journey began with his graduation from Edison High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1964, where he was a National Merit Scholar. He furthered his education at the University of Oklahoma, earning his degree before continuing on to the University of Oklahoma Medical School, from which he graduated in 1972. Steve’s dedication to service was evident during his nine years with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, where he was stationed in Puerto Rico. After his military service, he pursued a career in pathology, practicing with the Pathology Group PC at St. Anthony and Mercy Hospitals. His work as a pathologist was marked by his commitment to his patients and his profession. In his personal life, Steve was a devoted member of Faith Bible Church in Edmond. On May 20, 1995, he married Eileen Freeman, with whom he shared many cherished years. Steve was a loving father to his children, Joseph Hargis (Melody) of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and the late Stephanie Eskew. He is also survived by his sister, Norma Ledoux, of Oklahoma City, along with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. Steve will be remembered for his profound dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his contributions to the field of medicine. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and commitment that will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service to honor Steve’s life and legacy will be held on August 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Bible Church in Edmond.
