Services for Mike Cartmill, 56, of Edmond will be at 10 am Wednesday at Edmond First Baptist Church with Brad Cartmill, Pastor and cousin of the deceased, officiating. Coach Cartmill died Sunday following a brief illness. Viewing will be Tuesday at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond.
Coach Cartmill was born Nov. 15, 1953 in Edmond to John and Anna Belle Cartmill. He attended Edmond Public Schools, where he was an acclaimed multi-sport athlete. After graduation from high school, he attended Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship. He married Janet Landrum Sept. 14, 1973. Together, they raised three children, daughter Rachel and two sons, J.J. and Pat.
Coach Cartmill began his coaching career after graduating from Central State College. He coached high school athletes in Edmond, Billings and Chandler and was the head football and head baseball coach at Santa Fe South High School in Oklahoma City at the time of his death. He had also worked as a sales representative for Twid’s Sporting Goods of Midwest City and Rawlings Corporation.
While Coach Cartmill left the coaching profession for a period of time to enter business, he never really quit coaching. He coached his sons, and dozens of other Edmond youngsters in recreation football and baseball. For many years, he worked as a camp coach at The University of Central Oklahoma.
Perhaps his greatest coaching moments were during the last six years at Santa Fe South, where he literally built the school’s first football program. Coach Cartmill’s idea of coaching went far beyond the practice and playing fields. He put his heart and soul into working with the young people he loved and admired at Santa Fe South. Any time left in his day, after teaching and coaching, was spent with the family he loved and cherished. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the many students, whose lives he touched.
Coach Cartmill is survived by his wife and three children, Rachel and her husband Alexander Vindman of Kiev, Ukraine, son J.J. and his wife Michelle of Edmond, and Pat, also of Edmond. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Madison Cartmill and grandson, JohnDavid Cartmill both of Edmond and by a sister, Susie Hibbler and her husband Russ and their two children, Jonnie and Buck.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a granddaughter, Sarah Abigail Vindman. Donations can be made to the football and baseball teams at Santa Fe South High School.
