

Newcomb was the first of seven children born to Smith Wayne Hayes and Annie Laurie Hayes. He was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma on July 31, 1928, and grew up in Oklahoma City, where the family lived at 832 N.E 15th Street.
Newcomb was educated in the Oklahoma City Schools attending Lincon Elementary, Webster Junior High School and Central High School. He graduated in the class of 1946.
He attended the University of Oklahoma briefly, worked for a home builder for a few years, then he and his friend Jimmy Whitney joined the US army. Following basic training at Fort Hood, they were both stationed in Germany for the next two years but not the same area. Newcomb was honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of corporal.
He returned to Oklahoma and resumed his education at the University of Oklahoma where he received a degree in Geology in 1957. He met his wife Sue Reeder at this time, and they married in 1957. They shared 58 years of marriage until her passing in 2015.
Newcomb was employed by Baroid Drilling Fluid inc. for almost 30 years. During these years Newcomb and Sue lived in Williston, North Dakota; Craig, Colorado; Casper, Wyoming; Gillette, Wyoming; and then spent 16 years in Soldotna and Anchorage, Alaska.
Their son, Steven was born in Soldotna Alaska in 1964. Steven worked for Continental/ United Airlines for 30 years as an Operations Analysis until his death in 2023.
In 1978 the family moved to Casper Wyoming where they eventually retired. Newcomb was an avid golfer and was a member of the Casper Petroleum club and the Paradise Country club.
In 2017, he moved back to Oklahoma to be near his family.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, his wife Sue Hayes, his son Steven S. Hayes and his sisters Rosemarry Hayes Cliff and Carolyn Hayes.
In Oklahoma he is survived by his sister Helen Hayes Bondurant and her two sons Russell and Randall Cole. In Virgina, two younger brothers James W. Hayes and Bert Franklin Hayes. In Colorado his youngest brother Robert Hayes.
There will be no service. He will be placed with his wife and son at Rose Hill Burial Park in the cremation garden in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
