Woody was born on January 17, 1939 in Maysville, Oklahoma to Boyd and Ruby Courtney. He attended Pauls Valley High School graduating in 1957. Upon graduation, he did his undergraduate studies at Oklahoma State University, East Central University, and Central State University before earning his Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Oklahoma.
While in high school, Woody met Janice Spence and after a two-year courtship, the two were married on August 6, 1959. They had two children, Steve and Myra.
Woody was employed by the State of Oklahoma Vocational Rehab during the initial years of his career before moving to the Veterans Administration, where he served over 30 years as a Counseling Psychologist. In his role with the VA, Woody helped change the lives of hundreds of veterans. It was a job
Woody loved because he got to interact with veterans, putting them on a path that gave them a better life.
He retired in 2007 at the age of 68. After retirement, Woody simply piddled. You could find him on a lawnmower somewhere on his three acres, or climbing a ladder with a chainsaw in hand. Quite often, his grandkids were around helping with chores and going through what he called his treasures in the four barns on his property. Woody loved being outdoors and working with his hands, whether it be at his place, or someone else’s cutting wood, hauling brush, or fixing something that was broken. Anyone who knew Woody knew that he was the most loving husband, father, grandfather and sibling a family could ask for. And he shared this same love with his community of friends.
Woody is preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Ruby Courtney, his wife Janice Courtney, and his little brother JL Courtney. He is survived by his son Steve Courtney (Rebecca) of Edmond, and Myra Smith (Jeff) of Edmond. Woody left behind four wonderful grandchildren, Aaron Courtney of Yukon, Jacob Courtney of Bethany, Katrina Courtney and Rachel Smith both attending OU in Norman. He is also survived by his sister, Loretta Owens (Glenn) of Pauls Valley. His older brother Ralph Courtney (Barbara) of Edmond, A brother-in-law, Larry Spence (Emily) of Pauls Valley, and many special nieces and nephews. He also left behind a very special relationship with Elaine Horton of Edmond.
