Richard was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 10th, 1930 to Anne and Henry Schumacher. His childhood experiences and early upbringing would set the stage for his resilient style and outgoing personality.
Richard spent most of his childhood in Zanesville, Ohio, attending Saint Nicholas Catholic school through high school. During his junior high and high school years he excelled in sports, setting the stage for his lifelong love of softball and baseball. He played Triple A baseball in California, prior to enlisting in the Air Force, during the Korean War. He spent time at numerous bases, finally serving in Bermuda. He liked to brag that the Air Police, who were standing champions of the softball league, failed to win another title after he joined his squadron at third base.
Upon discharge from the Air Force, Richard moved back to Zanesville where he married Kay Dittmar and started a family. He completed a degree at his beloved Ohio State University. After living in Maryland, Mississippi and Midland, his young family ended up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma where he began his career with Phillips Petroleum Company. Richard and Kay would raise two daughters, and welcome a third, during this time. Richard was an active father, and thoroughly enjoyed coaching youth sports, even when his daughters’ interest was less than enthusiastic. Catholicism was also a very important part of his life, and a nightly novena was a regular occurrence.
In the early 80s, Richard moved the family to Oklahoma City, where he would develop lifelong friendships that meant the world to him. He enjoyed working for himself as a geologist and when his beloved Kay passed away in 2011, the relationships that he had with numerous friends and coffee group buddies sustained his joy for life.
Richard is survived by his three daughters, Teresa Daly (Hugh; Freehold, New Jersey) of Chicago, Illinois, Tamara Schumacher-Konick (Steve) of Dallas, Texas, and Tracy Schumacher (Wade Stewart) of Norman, Oklahoma. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Megan Daly, Madeline Daly and Reagan Stewart and one grandson Jake Stewart.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Dean Drooby for his unwavering support and kindness. They would also like to thank Dr. Branislav Schifferdecker and Dr. John Taylor as well as the staff at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital.
A Rosary service will be held at the Baggerley Funeral Home 930 S Broadway, Edmond, Oklahoma, Wednesday, January 12th at 5:30 PM. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will follow from 6:00 PM - 8:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Catholic Charities.
