Austin entered the world as the New Year’s Baby during the historic Eastern Ontario Ice Storm of 1998, in Renfrew, Ontario. From the very beginning, he was a happy and curious child who loved the outdoors. When his brother Reece was born two years later, Austin proudly embraced his new role as big brother.
Austin first discovered his passion for hockey in Renfrew, where he loved scoring goals and supporting his teammates. Hockey was more than a sport to him — it was a lifelong passion that followed him when his family later moved to Petawawa. Although injury brought his playing career to an early end, his love for the game never faded. He remained an avid Edmonton Oilers fan and attended games whenever he could, proudly supporting his team through every season. Austin later found another way to stay connected to the sport by becoming a referee for a recreational hockey league in Edmonton. His fellow officials remember him fondly for his upbeat personality and the joy he brought to every game.
As a boy, Austin spent many happy summers at his grandparents’ cottage on Lake of Bays in Huntsville, Ontario, and in Port Dover with family. Those years were filled with fishing, swimming, water skiing, sailing, exploring, and endless adventures alongside his brother, cousins, aunts, and uncles. As the oldest among the children, Austin took great pride in setting a good example for his brother Reece, his sister Mackenzie, and his cousins.
Life eventually brought Austin to Edmonton, Alberta, where he began building both his career and his future. From the age of sixteen, Austin had a passion for cars. He owned many over the years and was always working on them. He began his career selling cars, but when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the industry, Austin adapted and found his calling in the plumbing trade. He took great pride in the skills he was developing and was well on his way to a successful career. His coworkers remember his warm smile, positive attitude, and genuine enthusiasm for his work.
Edmonton also brought many meaningful changes to Austin’s life. There, he met and married the love of his life, Mariel, and together they purchased their first home. His family circle grew to include not only cherished in-laws, but also his stepmother Naomi and brothers Lorin and Dashiell, as well as his stepfather Jamie and siblings Emily (Rory) and Alex. Austin deeply valued family gatherings, celebrations, and the time spent together.
Austin also loved to travel and embraced every opportunity to explore new places and experience different cultures. He especially treasured trips to the United Kingdom, where he was able to connect with extended family and strengthen those meaningful relationships.
While living in Alberta, Austin fully embraced the beauty and adventure of the Rocky Mountains. Whether camping with Mariel, cat-skiing with Reece, or backcountry hiking with his dad — including one memorable three-day trip when his dad forgot the tent — Austin found joy and peace in the outdoors. In some ways, it feels fitting that Jasper, a place of such beauty and meaning to him, was where his journey came to an end.
Austin had a magnetic personality. People were naturally drawn to him — they wanted to know him, spend time with him, and be around him. He had a remarkable ability to make others feel valued and heard, always greeting people with a warm smile and genuine interest. Austin was kind, caring, and deeply compassionate, qualities that everyone who knew him recognized immediately.
It wasn’t only people who were drawn to Austin — animals seemed to love him too. While working on a residential plumbing project one day, Austin discovered an abandoned domesticated bunny in a unit under construction. Without hesitation, he brought the bunny home, named him Brioche, and gave him a safe and loving home.
Austin was predeceased by his grandmother, Ann, and his mother-in-law, Benilda.
He will forever be missed by his Soulmate & Wife Mariel; his parents Fiona (Jamie) & Kevin (Naomi); brother Reece & sister Mackenzie; in-laws, Reimar, Jay, and Breianna. He will be lovingly remembered by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family & friends around the world.
Husband, Son, Brother, and Friend.
