David is predeceased by his mother Lilian, father James, sister Lilian, brother James, and son-in-law Vince Hawke. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rene; daughters Julie (Vince) Fountain, Amanda (Doug) McMahon, and Lindsey Hawke; grandchildren Katherine (David) Puittinen, Andrew (Jordan) McMahon, William Fountain, Nicole (Tyler) Russell, Gordon Fountain; and great-grandchildren Sydney, Ellie, and Sophie.
Born May 24, 1936 in Liverpool, England, he later worked and lived across Europe and Africa, eventually settling in Canada in 1968 to raise his family.
David was very involved in curling – he was president of the NACA, coached competitive junior curlers (including two of his daughters), and curled himself in seniors and competitive wheelchair curling. He was passionate about golf and was a member of the Victoria Men’s Golf Club for many years. He also loved to sail and fish at Cold Lake.
Everything he participated in he did whole-heartedly – he loved to immerse himself in his various activities, organizations, and interests, even creating a social club for his fellow residents and neighbours once he moved into Shepherd’s Care. He always found a way to bring people together – he was much loved and will be sorely missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of 5D3 at the University of Alberta Hospital for providing such kind and compassionate care in his final days.
A private family celebration of life will be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Arthritis Society.
