Donald was born July 24, 1945 in Herbert, Saskatchewan. He is predeceased by father Donald Earl Corothers and mother Lily Mae (Francis) Corothers, also of Herbert. He is survived by his six children, their spouses, and thirteen grandchildren. Donald’s children include his son Charles Corothers (wife Jocelyn), son Tracy Corothers, daughter Patricia Dewolfe, son Jan Corothers, daughter Lisa Corothers, and son Steven Corothers (wife Sara). He is also survived by his sister Janet Corothers (husband Gary), and their children Tammy Cornelson & Tommy Byklum.
Strong-willed and dedicated, full of perseverance, a pride and passion for his work, and a willingness to take chances until they worked out; these are strengths that not only defined some Donald’s character, but served him well as he rose to become a successful and prominent businessman. Donald worked tirelessly as a corporate employee, and later a store owner with both Beaver Lumber and Home Hardware. As the store owner, he grew the Beaver Lumber franchise in Whitehorse, Yukon (1985-1994) to be the most profitable across Canada. He later bought & built-up his Home Hardware Building Center in Fort McMurray, Alberta (2004-2015) to be a top performing store in Canada, after which he retired.
He was also full of compassion & generosity, had an enormous heart, a great sense of humour, and loved helping friends and family at every opportunity. These are qualities that made him a great man, and a great family-man. Donald was well-loved by all of his family, friends, peers and acquaintances. He enjoyed travel (especially long road trips in the car), cheering for his favourite sports teams (none more than the Saskatchewan Roughriders), and giving back to his community through numerous clubs, charities, and sponsorships.
In lieu of flowers you are invited to make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or Diabetes Canada, in Donald’s honour.
A celebration of life will occur at a later date with details to follow.
