Gilbert Calhoun

5 febrero , 194022 abril , 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert Calhoun at the age of 81 years.

Gilbert will be forever loved by his wife of 60 years Pauline, children Rory (Colleen), Kelly (Wade Schell), and Scott (Maria Strause), grandchildren Crystal and Jamie, great granddaughter McKenna, as well as other relatives and friends. He will be dearly missed.

Gilbert worked for N.A.R/CN Rail for 38 years in Smith, Peace River, and Edmonton. After a short retirement from CN, Gilbert retuned to work for the Edmonton Catholic School Board as a teacher’s assistant working with disabled children. After he finally decided to fully retire it was not many years later that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He continued to enjoy life to the best of his ability.

Gilbert was a very kind and caring man. We are sure many of you have great memories of Gilbert at the Smith train station, curling, ball diamonds, camping, fishing, hunting, Junior Forest Wardens, playing cards, and later in life, golf. He was also very talented in cross stitching and even took courses how to frame his masterpieces. He loved to tease and loved to laugh!

Gilbert spent his final years at Jasper Place Lodge in Edmonton. The family would like to thank the staff for their care and compassion. We will be forever grateful.

If anyone so desires, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Pauline, I am so sorry to hear of your loss and will keep you and your family in my prayers. I so enjoyed getting to know Gilbert through you and I will always remember him as a kind and gentle soul who loved to laugh. And as I recall, we had many laughs during our time together at St. Mark School in the mid 90's.

God Bless

Uncle Gilbert Rest In Peace❤️, My favourite memory of Uncle Gilbert was watching Auntie Pauline and Uncle Gilbert dance at family weddings or gatherings, they were so beautiful dancers they would float around the dance floor,, and you could tell how much they loved each other. Also I will never forget his laugh, it was a beautiful sound❤️
My deepest sympathies to Auntie Pauline, Rory, Kelly and Scott and families, Much Love to you All❤️

Pauline and family, sorry for your loss of a great man.
In the spring of 1985 the Calhoun’s let me stay with them for my last month of grade 11. My parents had moved to Devon Alberta and without hesitation they offered me a place to call home. I’m sure Scott and I gave Gilbert a few more grey hairs. They treated me like family. I will always remember Gilbert’s laugh, it was almost child like when he really got going and it would make me laugh even more.

Thanks for the laugh!

So sorry to hear this, Pauline and family.

Gilbert and I shared many laughs together at St. Mark Junior High. He was a kind man, with an inquisitive and infectious sense of humour. I was so interested that a railroad man would want to "change tracks" and work with special needs children; he was very good at it, always patient with the children--more so than with the adults, he might joke!

I remember quite a few conversations about concerts he'd attended, one of which continued to come up: "Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers." Always got a good laugh. We also had fun putting together AV carts and exercise bikes, whatever the principal would "get a deal" on. Good memories.

I will truly miss Gilbert.

Thinking of you, Pauline, and your family in this difficult time.

Pauline and family
Sending you my deepest sympathy on the news of Gilbert gone to heaven. I worked with Gilbert at St. Mark School for many years. At coffee time, we all shared many laughs, yet sometimes some not so good news. Gilbert was very well liked and we enjoyed his warm smile as he passed the office numerous times a day. He had a knack in listening attentively to our woes and semi complaints. A charming listener with a bit of suggestions at times. He demonstrated his strong faith along with you Pauline as you both fervently followed your catholic religious duties. Something you do not see often these days. I will continue to pray for the repose of Gilbert's soul, as I'm convinced he is now in Heaven, walking, talking with the saints and angels, even with my husband Leo.
Please know that Gilbert is in a new location now, and you can see where he has been, by the many little warm lights he has left behind.
Gilbert.... may you receive the great rewards God has promised to those who love and served Him.
Peace for your Soul Gilbert!!! Pauline, may our Lord give you strength, courage and perseverance that you will need day by day.
