

On December 17, 2022, Irene Velma Loutitt (Gaucher), cherished mom, wife, kohkum, sister, auntie, and friend, passed away at the age of seventy-three. She was born in Paddle Prairie to her parents George Gaucher and Mary Gaucher (Whitford) and was one of ten children. Irene’s ready laugh, youthful spirit, and warm heart will be missed by all that knew her. She was a fluent speaker of her first language, Woodland Cree, and passionate advocate for Indigenous people through her career and community involvement. She proudly carried her Cree name, wâpimaskwa nôtokwêw, and was a respected Elder.
Irene married Jack Loutitt in 1974, followed by the birth of their son Sheldon a year later; Shannon later completed their family. Irene become mother-in-law to Sheldon’s wife Katie Loutitt (Hrdlicka) in 2003 and was a proud “Crazy Kohkum” to her beloved grandchildren Tyler, Keaton, and Charlie. To many, she was a friend, mentor, confidante, and sister. She had friends from all corners of the country and spent time living in Paddle Prairie, Calgary, Hay River, Inuvik, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Wetaskiwin.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Irene’s honour to Canadian Blood Services or the Canadian Cancer Society. A gathering will be held in the spring in the Edmonton area. Cremation entrusted to Memories Funeral Home.
