With gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of John Arthur Armstrong after a courageous five-month battle with cancer. John left this world as he lived, surrounded by the love of his family and close friends who offered boundless support throughout his journey.
John proudly served with the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly 20 years before beginning his “retirement” career in information technology, working with AUPE and later with PCL. He was especially proud of his involvement in the development of Edmonton’s Ice District. Upon his second retirement, John discovered a passion for woodworking. He created beautiful pieces and built lasting friendships through the CFB Edmonton Wood Club. This passion also drew in his brother Lloyd, and together they spent countless hours working side by side in the garage after John’s diagnosis.
A devoted family man, John cherished traveling with family and friends, embarking on many adventures with his buddies Johnny D and Dale. He also loved riding his motorcycle, forever seeking out the curviest roads. Following the passing of his close friend Michael Downey, John continued to honour his memory by riding each year with Michael’s wife, Bev (affectionately known as “Wifey 2”), in the Ride for Dad to support prostate cancer research.
John was predeceased by his mother, Jodie Armstrong. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Susan; his step-son and partner in crime, Ethan; and his special “hey kid,” Sandra Milroy (Jonathan), along with the joy of his life, his granddaughter Brooke. He is also survived by his father, Lea Armstrong of West Lorne, Ontario; siblings Lloyd (Michele) Armstrong, Jeff Armstrong, and Leigh-Anne (Darren) Donston, all of Ottawa, Ontario; as well as his brother-in-law Tom Wheatcroft of Edmonton and sister-in-law Sheila (Tom) Kveder of Lethbridge. John was a proud uncle to nieces and nephews Samantha Armstrong, Barbara Armstrong, Baileigh Armstrong, Jesse (Beth) Donston, Alyssa Donston, Jordan Donston, Matthew (Kat) Raymond, David (Radka) Bokovay, Michelle Bokovay, Riley (Jayme) Kveder, and Ocean Kveder.
We would like to thank our friends who are family and Dr. Robert Turner and the Oncology teams at the Cross Cancer Institute for their support during the 5 months of John’s journey.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail Edmonton, AB on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Cremation entrusted to Memories Funeral Home.
