John lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories.
Born on December 12, 1929 in Bratislava, Slovakia, he moved with his parents and siblings to Vienna, Austria when he was just a young boy. He emigrated to Canada at the age of 22 and settled in Edmonton where he met his loving wife Ursula.
He studied economics at the University of Alberta and dedicated more than 60 years to his profession. His entrepreneur spirit took hold and multiple businesses were born. Edmonton Machine Tools was his first major venture. Unfortunately, the 80’s were a rough time for many
Albertans in the Oil and Gas Sector. Later in life, he found fulfillment and a new purpose by starting his own accounting consulting business and worked to age 94. Many of his long standing clients became close friends.
He had a passion for sports. He thoroughly enjoyed curling, bowling, golf, soccer, hockey and watching the Edmonton Oilers. He also loved travelling, especially his visits back home to Vienna and his yearly trips to Fairmont Hot Springs and Jasper Park Lodge with family and friends.
John will be remembered for his passion to help people and being a
leader/mentor for many people and in his community. He was involved in many charities and societies such as the German Society, the Vienna Opera Ball, multiple hockey associations, soccer associations, curling associations, community leagues and the Catholic church. John was a member of the St. Theresa Parish.
Left to cherish his memory is his partner in life and love of 54 years,
Ursula; son, Jason (Tonya); and his grandchildren: Heidi, Petra, and Eric, He also leaves behind his brother Walter, as well as numerous extended family and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Maria & Johann, his sisters Mädy & Grete, and his son James.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at St. Theresa’s Church, 7508 29 Ave NW.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
