We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Jonathan Paul Penner on March 31, 2026, at the age of 57.
Jonathan was born in Steinbach, Manitoba, on January 14, 1969. He was the eldest son of Anne and Wilmer Penner.
Jonathan was a mechanical engineer who worked for various companies servicing the oil and gas industry and in heavy machinery manufacturing. He was highly regarded by his colleagues as a talented and creative engineer and held several design patents.
Jonathan was a devoted father to his three children and a loving husband. He was a proud hockey dad to his son Oleg and volunteered his time at the swim club where his daughter Bozhena and son Sergii participated.
Jonathan loved climbing, hiking, skiing, camping, and canoeing, and shared many memorable trips with his family. He was supportive and understanding—never quick to anger and always willing to listen. His kind nature drew people to him.
Jonathan loved his children deeply and was never afraid to show it—whether wearing painted nails to work because his daughter wanted to paint them, or spending entire weekends at hotels and pools so she could compete in swim meets, or cheering on his son at hockey tournaments. No matter the outcome, he never made them feel discouraged.
He encouraged every idea his children had, no matter how unusual, and supported them in every project they pursued. He was often the first to motivate them to complete an art piece, an electronics project, or to help them learn how to cook. He was always there when his children needed him.
Jonathan served in the military reserves during his youth and was very proud to see his son Oleg follow in his footsteps.
Jonathan is survived by his children, Bozhena, Oleg, and Sergii; his wife, Nataliya; his brother, Eldred (Adelle), and nephew, Noah; his sister, Catherine; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and their families.
A funeral service for Jonathan will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail in Edmonton. A visitation will take place prior starting at 1pm. Interment will follow the service at Northern Lights Cemetery, 15203 Campbell Road in Edmonton; following the interment service, guests are invited back to Memories Funeral Home for light refreshments and fellowship in Jonathan's honour.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jonathan’s name to the charity, Save the Children.
