July 26, 1949 – May 5, 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of our sister Joy who passed
away on May 5, 2023. Joy is survived by her siblings – Stephanie, William,
Michael, Betty, Dorothy and Todd. Joy also leaves behind three nieces and six
nephews.
Joy was born to Dorothy and Bill Humen in Victoria, BC on July 26, 1949. Her
father was in the military for over 30 years. When Joy was three years old her
father was posted to Calgary which was the start of her nomadic life. From Calgary
she and her family went to Edmonton followed by Kingston, Ontario in 1958. In
June of 1966 she returned to Edmonton where she settled and refused to move
again as she had found her home. She worked for the Alberta Provincial
Government for over 30 years.
Joy was an avid collector of memorabilia of many forms from the 50s and 60s.
Glassware and I Love Lucy items were her most favored finds.
Joy was a talented artist who showed her skills with every crafting project she did.
Her talents included rug hooking, quilting, embroidery and cross-stitch. Her
cross-stitch projects were exceptionally beautiful.
Joy also got to use her artistic talents when volunteering at the Festival of Trees –
University Hospital Foundation. It gave her great pleasure participating in this
event as it combined three things in life that she enjoyed the most – crafting,
Christmas and organizing.
Joy was at her happiest when she was at her home especially when she was
outside in her beautiful garden.
At Joy’s request there will be no memorial service in Edmonton. She will be
interred with her Mother Dorothy Humen in Victoria.
