Lynne Patricia Smith - precious Wife of Bill, Mother of James and Katie (Chris Gonzalez), and Grandma of Gianna and Graham - passed away peacefully at South Terrace Continuing Care Centre on January 20, seven days after her 72nd birthday. Her family was at her side all through, and at the end of, her courageous and defiant eleven-year battle with Alzheimer’s. She never allowed it to overpower the warmth she has always shown to those around her.
Born in Southampton, England, Lynne was a talented medical secretary, working in world-renowned research programs at University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, and Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Dr. Fairfax and the wonderful staff at South Terrace for their love and support for Lynne over the last three years, and to the staff at Grey Nuns Hospital. May we all thank front line staff more often in the future than we have in the past.
Lynne was a shining light in many lives, and will be deeply missed by family and friends around the world. Some of the pictures in the slide show capture her dancing. It brought us joy to see her continue this practice with the staff at South Terrace, who recounted their memories of it to us as Lynne’s final day approached. May that thought comfort you as much as it does us.
We will celebrate Lynne’s life when it is safe to do so in a way she would like. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta or an animal rescue agency of your choice.
Thank you for holding Lynne in your hearts.
Bill, James and Katie
Don’t dwell on Goodbyes. It’s the parting they prolong, not the being together.
Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
Some music and images for the heartstrings:
