It is with heavy, but peaceful hearts we announce the passing of Miles Steve Kuryvial on May 7, 2026 at the age of 89 years.
Miles leaves behind wife of 59 years, Doreen, daughters, Loralee (Duane), Robertson, and Karen (Corey) Gay,
grandchildren Carter (Sapphire) Robertson, Cole Robertson, Callan & Owen Gay and great-granddaughter London Robertson.
Miles also leaves to mourn, brother-in-law Darrel (Darlene), Charla (Craig), Cody (Emily),sister-in-law Tess, Darrell (Joanne), Mark (Kori), Randy (Michelle), Michele (Shane), Trevor (Jacqui) and families.
Miles grew up on a farm in Cranford, Alberta. Although admittedly mischievous and not so focussed during his elementary school years, Miles was a strong student and went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees in Agriculture at the University of Alberta. He met his wife Doreen while both were working in Red Deer. After a brief time working in private sector, Miles began his career with the Government. Moving north from Edmonton, Miles became District Agriculturist in Spirit River then Grande Prairie until his retirement.
Miles felt most at home on the farm, in his words, ‘it’s all he knew’. Miles and Doreen moved to La Glace in 1979 to enjoy farm life again. He farmed many years with in-laws Harvey and Darrel. Miles and Doreen moved to Edmonton in 2004 to be closer to special grandsons. Miles and Doreen were also able to enjoy snowbird life, wintering in Mesa, Arizona for a few years. Miles suffered an illness in 2008 but after time, he recovered and lived 18 ‘bonus’ years and was able to enjoy two more grandsons Callan and Owen Gay and most recently great-granddaughter London Robertson.
Miles was a proud Papa who loved to joke and tease. He had a twinkle in his eye and enjoyed hearing all about his grandsons daily life, especially sports and school. Miles most enjoyed morning coffee with his buddies, solving the world’s problems each day. He spoke fondly of this morning routine. Miles enjoyed all sports. His favourite team to watch would be his grandsons’ teams but also spent many days watching the Blue Jays and Oilers.
Miles was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Steve Kuryvial, brother Jerry Kuryvial and Doreen’s parents Harvey and Dorphy Bekkerus.
At Miles’ request there will be no funeral service. He was not a man that enjoyed the spotlight. Underneath his sometimes serious exterior, Miles had a huge soft spot for kids and people going through challenging times.
Donations to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Children’s Mental Health unit or Amy’s House would be a way to honour his memory for those wishing to do so.
