49 years old
October 21, 1975 – April 17, 2025
It is with profound sadness and shattered hearts that we share with you the news of the sudden passing of our beloved Mirek Grzeszczuk, who left us unexpectedly on Thursday, April 17th at the age of 49. Mirek was a force of generosity, kindness and light in the lives of everyone who knew him, and his unforeseen and abrupt departure from our midst leaves an unfillable void in our hearts. We are swallowed whole in our grief as we try to begin to imagine a life without him.
Mirek was born and raised in beautiful Kłodzko, Poland before moving to Edmonton, Canada at the age of 22, where he would join his young wife Magda and her family after their wedding in Poland in the summer of 1997. They were just kids when they met years earlier, yet their connection was instant and the love they shared for one another unwavering. Always a rather “mature” young man, he was deeply grounded in the values of hard work, honesty, integrity, and dedication to family. As he set out to build a life with Magda in his new home and country, he became her rock and her support – her Miruś. In 2012 they welcomed their daughter and only child, Olivia. She was his sun and his moon – he was her world. Kindred spirits: inseparable – the most perfect example of the ideal and sacred father-daughter bond.
Mirek was a born chef and his culinary adventures brought him such contentment and joy. The kitchen was his art studio and cooking was his creative craft. It was one of the ways in which he shared his love with his family and friends. He adored the outdoors, especially the Blackmud Creek ravine, the Rocky Mountains, campfires and summer camping adventures! Along with Magda and Olivia, he was an enthusiastic traveler, eager to explore the world – to see how others lived and to taste what nourished them. He loved everyone in his life deeply, honestly and patiently. His vocabulary was free from harsh words, judgements or criticisms of others. He was the best; favourite; beloved; admired and cherished uncle to all his nieces and nephews. He was always on their team, cheering them on in all of their lives’ pursuits, passions and adventures! He was a caring and thoughtful son to his mother, a loving brother, a best-friend brother-in-law, the perfect son-in-law, the most steadfast and dependable friend and colleague. Mirek was fortunate to call his profession in civil engineering a passion, and he found a warm and generous family away from home with his many colleagues at MPE serving as the company’s Edmonton Region Manager. He will be missed by all of them, and all those who knew him both personally and professionally. Mirek was quite simply a good man – the best the world has to offer.
Although his time with us on this earth was far too brief, he made an indelible and profound impact on all those who were fortunate enough to know him. Left to carry his light and cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 28 years, Magda and his most beloved teenage daughter Olivia, his deeply mourning mom Krysia (Jurek), his older brothers Krzysztof (Stella), Bogdan-Bodek (Dorota), his baby-sister Ela (Jarek), parents in law Ala and Robert, sister-in-law Sylvia (Adam), his adoring nieces and nephews: Ada (Benjamin), Krzysiu (Patrycja), Viktoria (Defrim), Kuba (Emma), Markus, Pola and Sonia, his grand-niece Lea, as well as a wide circle of friends all over the world, his entire extended family, his dear work colleagues and friends at MPE, and loved ones whose lives were made better by knowing Mirek. He was predeceased by his father, Jan Grzeszczuk in June of 1996.
The grieving family will say goodbye to Mirek in a private and intimate ceremony. A service celebrating Mirek’s life will be held on May, details of which will follow shortly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, Alberta Homeward Hound Animal Rescue or another animal rescue organization of your choosing.
Although today the world feels completely enveloped in darkness without Mirek's light, and our hearts feel as though they too stopped beating along with his, we take solace in knowing that his immense life-force, his optimism and his love will continue to guide us – to help us heal from this loss – to give us strength to carry his memory forever in our hearts.
All may be gone – but love survives – only the love survives.
