Dick was the seventh in a family of 13 children born to Katie and John Hanak. He was a lifetime resident of Edmonton. Dick and Dorothy wed in 1958 and they were blessed with five children. Dick’s life changed profoundly in 1967 when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He was employed by the City of Edmonton for 26 years and enjoyed his position of Supervisor of Concrete Maintenance but retired in 1977 when his disease worsened. For the last four years he was unable to continue to live at home due to his increasing disabilities. He was fortunate to move to Capital Care Dickinsfield in June of 2009 which was in close proximity to his home. Outings were enjoyed with Dorothy pushing Dick’s wheelchair to the nearby malls and home visits to savor time in their yard. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Carolynne (George), Susan (Darrell), Cheryl (Michael); sons, Richard, Steven (Shannon); and grandchildren, Geordie (Sabrina), Christina, Michael, Jason, Marc and Stephanie; as well as great-granddaughters, Kaylah, Rylee and Sidney. Also surviving are his sister, Ann; brother, Leonard (Sylvia); sister, Judith; and sisters-in-law, Judi and Jan. He also leaves to mourn Dorothy’s sister, Darlene (Bill) and her brother, Jack and their families. Dick was predeceased by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. The family wishes to thank all levels of care givers and support workers at Dickinsfield for their care and caring; their presence during Dick’s final illness was a gift.
