Ruby Cabasan Steel
March 27, 1966 - September 17, 2023
Ruby was born on the small island of Guimaras, in the Philippines. Her early years were spent under the care of her very strict, but loving grandma, Manuela. At 10 years old, she travelled to Bacolod City to live with her Aunt Lydia, Uncle Rolando and younger cousins. She graduated from West Negros College, majoring in computer programming and secretarial studies. The lure of adventure took her to Hong Kong, where she worked for 4 years as a nanny. There, she met and married Adam in 1993 and soon after, moved to Edmonton, Canada.
Ruby enjoyed her first snowfall, learned to skate, and took driving lessons on cold, icy days. Never one to shy away from a challenge, after several years of restaurant work, she completed the Unit Clerk course at Grant Macewan and was employed by the University Hospital in 1997. As a fast learner and efficient worker, Ruby became the go-to person for the doctors on their rounds.
In 2000, Brandon was born, and Ruby embraced her role as a dedicated mother. She attended every swimming lesson, soccer game and school event.
Ruby was an athlete, an artist, and a world traveler. Despite her full-time jobs as a Unit Clerk and a mother, she attended Zumba class 5 times a week and would go for 10 km runs. She produced expert flower paintings and sold some of her work. Besides this, she also enjoyed making paper tole art, sewing, knitting, and petit point. Ruby travelled with friends through the united States and Europe, Bali, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic just to name a few places. In the few moments that she chose to relax, she enjoyed singing karaoke and watching the Filipino channel.
Ruby left us too soon and was a much-loved person by many people. Ruby had good friends from her work family, travel family, and Zumba family. Wherever she is now, they are lucky to have her.
