Shirley was born in April 1931, in St. Boniface, MB. She was the daughter of Scottish immigrants and grew up during the difficult times of the 1930s and 40s. Although challenging, those years were warmed by family and kinship including her siblings and many cousins who lived in the same neighborhood.
In 1952, Shirley met flyboy Hugh, and they were married four weeks later in Winnipeg. Over the following decade and a half, they moved frequently from one CFB to another, until turning their eyes to the Arctic. After several years in Nunavut communities, they settled in Yellowknife for what can only be described as the best years. Yellowknife was the place of wonderful memories, lifelong friendships, and fun-filled summers on Sanity Island at Prelude Lake.
Shirley is survived by her son John (Emily) of Beaumont, daughter Wendy (Gord) of Kamloops, grandchildren Jesse, Jaydyn, Kristopher, Pamela, and Brenda, along with several great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Andrew (Roberta) of Maple Ridge, sister Jacki (Chet) of Innisfil, and sister-in-law Judy of Holland Landing. Shirley is predeceased by her husband Hugh, daughter Karen, son Rick, grandson Bruce, and sisters Joyce and Margie.
Our family is grateful to all the staff at the Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre in Millwoods Edmonton who went above and beyond to provide Shirley with the comforts she needed over the past few years.
Contributions in memory of Shirley can be made to the Gray House Guild directly or via CanadaHelps.org using the Donate Button directly on the site.
