It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Suresh Katyal, a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather whose ingenuity, determination, and boundless love touched everyone who knew him. An accomplished Oil & Gas engineer, Suresh—known to most of Edmonton as "Steve"—had an extraordinary ability to solve any problem, negotiate with unmatched skill, and bring joy to every room.
Suresh leaves behind his loving wife Usha of 52 years, three children Sachin (Sonia), Millie (Narayan), and Shaunik (Ponam) who inherited his strong will and problem-solving skills, seven adoring grandchildren Rishaan, Rasik, Senna, Kaia, Kashik, Niyam and Mila who learned that Dadu/Nana always had the best stories.
An avid lover of the mountains, Suresh found his paradise in the Alberta Rockies, where he felt most at home among the nature, lakes and fresh air. His negotiating prowess was legendary—he could strike a deal that left everyone feeling like they'd won, armed with nothing more than his charm and that room-lighting smile that could melt the hardest hearts. His family fondly remembers how he would expertly hide his favorite sweets, always with a mischievous response when caught sneaking mithai, cookies or nuts.
He also had a deep appreciation for ghazals, especially the soulful melodies of Jagjit Singh, whose music would often fill the house as he worked on his latest project. As the family's unofficial handyman and official problem-solver, Suresh had an answer for everything—from squeaky hinges to life's biggest challenges. His workshop was very organized, where every tool had its perfect place.
Through his courageous battle with a spinal cord injury, Suresh showed us what real strength looked like. His laugh echoes in every room, his wisdom lives in every family project, and his spirit soars through those beloved Rocky Mountain peaks. His warmth and love will keep us all comforted forever.
We will miss you deeply, Dad, but we promise to carry on your legacy of kindness, determination, and the unshakeable belief that there's always a solution—you just have to be willing to look for it.
A funeral service for Suresh will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025 at 9:00am at Hainstock's Funeral Home & Crematorium, 9810 34th Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6E 6L1.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Spinal Cord Injury Alberta.
"Dad, we'll keep your garage organized just the way you liked it."
