Walter is survived by his wife of 72 years, Selma (Warkentin) Epp; his daughters, Sharon (David) Fuller and Katherine Aywaz; his sister, Agnes Dahl; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sons, David Epp and Donald Epp; his parents Gerhard Peter Epp and Aganetha (Schulz) Epp; two brothers who died in infancy and are buried in Russia, his sister Erna Lenzmann, his sister Martha Braun, and his brother Werner Epp; and one great-grandson.
Walter was born in Orel, Russia while his parents were emigrating from Russia to Canada. He spent his early years on the family farm, first in Osborne, Manitoba for 16 years and then in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
Walter married Selma Warkentin on April 6, 1953. Soon after they were married, they moved to Port Simpson, where Walter was a schoolteacher. He also taught in North Bend, Boston Bar and Surrey, before moving the family to Nova Scotia where he taught school for another four years.
While living in Nova Scotia, Walter also started a church for the Mennonite Brethren Conference.
From Nova Scotia, he moved the family back west, to Medicine Hat, Alberta, where he pastored a church for two years. From Medicine Hat, he moved his family to Edmonton, where Walter resided for the rest of his life. While in Edmonton, he pastored a church for a few years, then transitioned to financial planning and insurance. After his retirement, Walter enjoyed a number of years of singing in the St. David’s Welsh Male Voice Choir, working with the Gideons, and participating in the Edmonton chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
Walter loved God and he loved people. He was always happiest in a group, laughing and enjoying life with family and friends, and he never hesitated to tell people about Jesus.
There will be a service to celebrate Walter’s life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at Meadowlands Baptist Church, 2215 17 Street NW, Edmonton.
